From the Principal's Desk
Dear Parents,
The Bible guides us in every area of life, including child training. A verse in Scripture that teaches us the goal of child training as well as the process is Ephesians 6:4:
And, ye fathers, provoke not your children to wrath: but bring them up in the nurture and admonition of the Lord.
Here the Apostle Paul tells us that the goal of child training is "to bring them up." The process by which this is done is "in the nurture and admonition of the Lord." First, the goal. The words bring up translate a verb that has the idea of nourishing to the point of maturity. We want our children to grow to maturity, functioning on their own, making right decisions, and fulfilling responsibility, all while loving God and keeping His commandments, and helping others to do the same. This is a long process -- at least 20 years!
In order for children to mature, they must be given the right instruction, the right care, and the discipline. They must be taught obedience and be given just consequences for disobedience. They must be given the right academic and physical expectations, while simultaneously being supported in meeting those expectations. They must be taught the Word of God and led to understand and submit to their obligation to worship God. They must be taught respect for one another and for authority, learning selfless behavior appropriate for the situation. All of this leads to their maturity.
As parents and teachers we set benchmarks to evaluate how our children are progressing in their personal growth, so that they can ultimately fulfill the goal. Every step along the way leads toward their overall maturity. Our goal in child training is maturity: full development, capable of functioning responsibly on one's own. How is your child coming along?
Sincerely,
Pastor Sutton
