From the Principal’s Desk
Dear Parents,
Today starts our annual Read-A-Thon fundraiser. I want to write you and encourage you to participate in this event. Each year we have about 2/3 of the students participate; that is, 2/3 of the students bring in money. My belief is that all of the students should participate. Here’s why:
Everyone can participate. This is not an event with expectations above what any of us can do. I am not trying to be disrespectful when I say this, but no advanced degrees are necessary to support the Read-A-Thon. We are not even asking you to contribute more than you are able to give. We are asking you to do your best. Some will say that their budget is tight and they don’t have extra funds. They will say that tuition is expensive and there is not more money to give to a fundraiser. But what I see is that people make choices in how they spend their money, and if the will to give is there, they will figure out a way to give. Everyone can give something.
Your example matters. Your example matters to your children and your example matters to the other families in the school. Your children see how you prioritize your money, and form that they begin to develop a value system about money and possessions. If they see you giving, they will tend to develop the concept of giving. But if they see you not giving, they will go that way too, a way that encourages self-centeredness. Your example also encourages other parents to give. If I can write in two or three weeks that 100% of our children participated, that will set a precedent for families in the future to give. If few people give, then few people will give. The degree of your participation will work toward stimulating enthusiasm in the school to the same degree. Your example matters.
Tuition is low. If you were at another private school, you would be paying at least $500 to $1,000 more in tuition. The reason we keep tuition low is so we can make Christian education accessible to as many people as we can. But that also means that we need to supplement the amount we charge. If you can give more, I encourage you to do it. This helps everyone, especially the teachers, who are sacrificing in a significant way to provide this Christian education.
So again, the Read-A-Thon is a major event for us, and we need your participation. I think that everyone should participate. If you were not planning to participate, you should. And you can. I don’t want to set a minimum amount for you; just do your best, and everyone wins.
Sincerely,
Pastor Sutton
